Protesters have clashed with police in cities across the US over the killing of an unarmed African-American man at the hands of an officer in Minneapolis.
George Floyd was murdered by Chauvin, the Minneapolis white police officer who had his knee on Floyd's neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, with nearly three minutes of the time being after Floyd had become non-responsive.
Floyd was then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Minnesota's governor said the tragedy of the death of George Floyd had morphed into "something much different - wanton destruction".
New York, Atlanta, and other cities have seen violent unrest, while the White House was briefly locked down.
As unrest spread across dozens of American cities Friday, Trump gave the bold order to ready the Army for deployment to Minneapolis.
The get-ready orders were sent verbally Friday, after Trump asked Esper to come up with rapid deployment options if the Minneapolis protests continued to spiral out of control, according to a senior Pentagon official who was on the call.
The last time the White House evoked these powers was in 1992 during the riots in Los Angeles that followed the Rodney King trial.
Floyd's murder has reignited US anger over police killings of black Americans and reopened deep wounds over racial inequality across the nation.
It follows the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and others, which have all occurred since the Black Lives Matter movement was sparked by the acquittal of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012.
